Only money tells the truth.
That simple phrase is the driving force behind “Double Cross,” the third episode of Spider-Noir. Built around the hunt for a dangerous traitor, the plot plunges Ben Reilly (Nicholas Cage) deeper into New York’s criminal underworld while delivering enough twists, turns, and shocking revelations to keep viewers guessing until the very end.
The story begins with Silvermane (Brendan Gleeson) hiring Ben to investigate a suspected leak within his organization. Following the devastating attack on his mansion and the police raid at the docks, Silvermane is convinced that someone on the inside has been feeding information to his enemies. Determined to uncover the truth, he tasks Ben with identifying the rat — complete with a rather sizable retainer. As Ben follows leads and questions people with connections to Silvermane’s empire, it soon becomes evident that everyone is hiding something. Every conversation is layered with deception, forcing him to navigate a maze of conflicting loyalties and half-truths.
Nicolas Cage continues to deliver an outstanding performance as Ben Reilly, flawlessly balancing the character’s hard-boiled persona with moments of genuine charm and hilarity. Whether piecing together clues or confronting crooked cops a la Sam Spade, he continues to remain the high point of the series.
A major breakthrough arrives when Ben notices an important detail involving Silvermane’s money. The mob boss secretly marks the cash he distributes, giving himself a way to track where it ends up. The discovery provides Ben with a trail to follow and becomes a classic noir-style moment that fits perfectly within the show’s pulpy atmosphere.
The investigation brings suspicion onto several familiar faces, including Cat Hardy (Li Jun Li) and Winston (Lukas Haas). The deeper Ben digs, the more tangled the mystery becomes. Every lead points in multiple directions, and every answer seems to generate new questions.
Meanwhile, the larger conspiracy involving Flint Marko (Jack Houston), Lonnie Lincoln (Abraham Popoola), and Jimmy Addison (Jack Mikesell) continues to develop. Robbie Robertson (Lamorne Morris) and Janet Ruiz (Karen Rodriguez) make progress in their own investigation, uncovering information that suggests the three men all share a connection dating back to their military service. While these scenes occupy less screen time, they provide important clues that will no doubt play a larger role as the season progresses.
The central conflict intensifies when Ben reaches a troubling conclusion: Cat Hardy is the person Silvermane is searching for. Understanding that exposing her would most certainly mean her death, Ben decides not to reveal what he has learned and sets to work on a risky plan. Rather than turning Cat over to Silvermane, he manipulates the evidence to redirect suspicion. Using money taken from Silvermane’s safe and carefully arranging events behind the scenes, Ben constructs a convincing case against Winston.
The plan creates some of the episode’s strongest tension. One mistake could expose Ben’s deception, put Cat in even greater danger, and destroy everything he has worked to accomplish. Yet as the pieces fall into place, Silvermane becomes convinced that Winston is responsible for the betrayal.
The story builds toward a tense confrontation in the woods, where Silvermane gathers the key players and demands answers. With trust shattered and emotions running high, the atmosphere becomes increasingly ominous. The setting feels pulled straight from a classic crime story, with darkness surrounding characters who all have secrets to hide.
Then comes the devastating payoff.
Believing Winston has betrayed him, Silvermane delivers swift judgment. In one of the episode’s most shocking moments, Winston is executed, becoming the ultimate victim of Ben’s deception. The scene underscores the moral complexity at the heart of Spider-Noir. Ben succeeds in protecting one person, while another pays the ultimate price.
Just when it seems the story is over, the writers deliver one final surprise. As Silvermane reflects on what has happened, he suggests that one grave may not be enough to satisfy his growing paranoia. A gunshot suddenly rings out, but the episode cuts away before revealing who was targeted.
It’s a perfect ending to an episode built on uncertainty and betrayal.
“Double Cross” showcases Spider-Noir at its best. The mystery is compelling, the performances excellent, and the constant twists keep the tension high throughout. Nicolas Cage anchors the episode with another exceptional performance, bringing depth and gravitas to a character trapped between right and wrong. By the time the credits roll, viewers are sure to be left stunned by the consequences of Ben’s actions and eager to discover who may have become Silvermane’s latest victim.
I know I am.
