While Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla wasn’t the monster hit many had hoped for, its animated spin-off, Godzilla: The Series, gave the Americanized monster a whole new lease on life. Picking up immediately after the events of the film, this show didn’t just clean up the mess, it embraced everything fans loved most about Godzilla – from epic monster matches and globe-trotting adventures to humans doing their best to stay out of the way. Following Nick Tatopoulos (Ian Ziering) and the Humanitarian Environmental Analysis Team (H.E.A.T.) as they hunt a variety of mutated creatures, the series offered jaw-dropping action, clever twists, and a cast of characters you couldn’t help but root for, including cynical paleo-biologist Elsie Chapman (Charity James), allergy-prone engineer Mendel Craven (Malcolm Danare, reprising his role from the film), expert hacker Randy Hernandez (The Batman’s Rino Romano), and DGSE Agent Monique Dupre (Brigitte Bako).
Over the course of its two-season run, Godzilla: The Series carved out an identity all its own, delivering a number of unforgettable moments that defined late ’90s animation. Be it the beastly battles involving swarms of giant bees and super-sized germs or the quieter character-driven moments that helped give its source material some much-needed depth, the show remains one of the few genuine bright spots to come out of the much-derided reboot – producing more than a few standout episodes along the way.
So grab your umbrella and be mindful of all the fish, because here’s a look back at The 10 Best Episodes of Godzilla: The Series...

10. DeadLoch (1x11) – Despite protests from a highly skeptical Nick, H.E.A.T. travels to Scotland after receiving a distress call from Dr. Hugh Trevor (Roddy McDowall, in his final role before his death), who claims his research facility was attacked by the Loch Ness Monster. After discovering that this is far from a hoax, the team uncovers a far more sinister truth: their host has captured Nessie’s offspring and plans to sell it on the black market for an exorbitant sum. Meanwhile, a very gullible Dr. Craven embraces his Scottish roots with help from a local historian.

9. Web Site (1x18) – Tasked by the Pentagon to investigate reports of a rapidly growing spider population near an army base in the Canary Islands, H.E.A.T. soon discovers the true threat: a mutant black widow spider that has made the area its nest and laid thousands of eggs. Joining forces with a military detachment led by Major Anthony Hicks (Kevin Dunn, reprising his role from the film), the team races against time to eliminate the swarm of baby spiders and help Godzilla take down the monstrous mother before the infestation spirals out of control.

8. An Early Frost (1x19) – When Godzilla is accused of following in his father’s footsteps and attacking New York City, the military calls in H.E.A.T. to stop him. Complicating matters further, Secret Service agent Philippe Roache (Keith Szarabajka) returns from France with orders to exterminate Godzilla, believing Nick’s experiment has finally run its course. It soon becomes clear, however, that Godzilla is being framed. The true culprit is the Chameleon, a genetically engineered mutation created by ruthless tech mogul Cameron Winter (David Newsom) to turn the world against him. With Philippe closing in and a new monster threatening the Big Apple, Nick and his team must expose the truth and stop Winter before New York becomes collateral damage.

7. Bird of Paradise (1x10) – When Elsie’s former fiance, ornithologist Dr. Lawrence Cohen (Tate Donovan), accidentally unleashes a strange winged creature from an ancient tomb deep in the Mexican jungle, he calls in H.E.A.T. for help. Enter Quetzalcoatl, an evolutionary hybrid of bird and dinosaur, capable of breathing fire and shielded by nearly impenetrable feathers. As the destruction escalates, the team scrambles to find a way to stop the monster, however things take a dire turn when “Q” abducts Elsie to feed its ravenous offspring – raising the stakes to a personal and perilous level.

6. S.C.A.L.E. (2x03) – Presented in a distinctive documentary-style format, this Season 2 episode sends H.E.A.T. to Miami to contend with a giant mutant mosquito. Their mission quickly escalates when they draw the attention of S.C.A.L.E. (Servants of Creatures Arriving Late to Earth), a radical animal-rights group that believes mutations represent the next step in evolution. Led by the fanatical Alexandra Springer (Linda Blair), the group infiltrates Monster Island with a plan to unleash its residents upon the world. With time running out, H.E.A.T. joins forces with Godzilla, a military battalion led by Major Hicks, and unlikely stowaways Audrey (Paget Brewster) and Animal (Joe Pantoliano) to stop the impending catastrophe before it’s too late.

5. Juggernaut (1x20) – The mysterious Techno-Sentient crashes to Earth and begins bonding with human technology at an alarming rate. Growing to gargantuan proportions, it eventually taps into the internet and uncovers the locations of humanity’s weapons of mass destruction, placing the entire planet on the brink of elimination. With the stakes higher than ever, H.E.A.T. and Godzilla are forced into action, racing to stop the ever-adapting alien machine before it can seize control of the world’s nuclear arsenal and turn mankind’s deadliest creations against it.

4. Monster Wars, Part 2 (1x13) – The second chapter in this three-part saga finds Nick and his team captured by aliens and confronted with a terrifying revelation: an army of mutations, including a brainwashed Godzilla, will be unleashed upon major cities around the globe as the opening salvo of a full-scale invasion of Earth. As if that’s not bad enough, the invasion force is led by Cyber-Godzilla – a reborn, cybernetically enhanced version of the very first monster that attacked New York in the film. With humanity facing its darkest hour and Godzilla turned into a weapon against the world, everything is on the line.

3. Trust No One (1x21) – Acting on confidential intelligence obtained through Philippe, the H.E.A.T. team travels deep into the Amazon to investigate an abandoned laboratory where, 50 years earlier, French scientists successfully created a life-form composed entirely of pure DNA. This unstable entity possesses the terrifying ability to mimic the form of any creature it touches, turning the mission into a nerve-wracking exercise in paranoia. As suspicion spreads and trust within the team begins to fracture, Nick and his crew must stay one step ahead of the shape-shifting menace, aid Godzilla in battle, and find a way to destroy the creature before it can reproduce and usher in a new master race of monsters.

2. Competition (1x15) – A mission to Japan to investigate a string of mysterious disappearances quickly turns into a clash of wills between H.E.A.T. and the Japanese military, who view Godzilla as a threat rather than an ally. As tensions rise, the true danger emerges in the form of King Cobra, a super-sized snake stalking the woods around Mount Fuji. Teaming up with Dr. Ifukube and her 30,000 ton Robo-Yeti, the team soon find themselves in Tokyo where a thrilling showdown between Godzilla and the cold-blooded critter ensues. Meanwhile, Elsie and Randy locate the creature’s den and rescue the missing victims.

1. Monster Wars, Part 3 (1x14) – The thrilling arc barrels toward its blockbuster finale as H.E.A.T. makes a daring escape during a full-scale alien invasion. With an army of mutated creatures threatening the world, Godzilla is forced into a titanic showdown with his own father, while Monique, Elise, and the rest of the team battle against impossible odds – ultimately freeing Earth’s monsters to stand alongside humanity and sending the defeated aliens slinking away in humiliating retreat.
