Heistoween Day 18: Sam Neilloween

Who else could make clawing out one's own eyes so endearing?

Sam Neill in In the Mouth of Madness

Welcome to 2026's 31 Days of Heistoween, a daily dose of spooky icons, spine-tingling oddities, and — most harrowing of all — memes. Check back every day from now through October 31 for each daily entry!

I love Sam Neill. I adore Sam Neill. If you want to read more about my deeply personal feelings about Sam Neill, well, here you go. But I'm here right now to add yet another -oween micro holiday to the Halloween season. Yes, I'm inducting Sam Neilloween into the canon of Heistoween! We got -oweens in -oweens here.

I first celebrated Sam Neilloween back in 2021, and it's become a tradition for me ever since. And this year, the first spooky season since the man himself left this mortal plane, I think it's more relevant than ever. Celebrating it is quite simple, too: You just watch five of Sam's horror classics.

  • The Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981)
  • Possession (1981)
  • In the Mouth of Madness (1994)
  • Event Horizon (1997)
  • Daybreakers (2010)

Personally, I suggest you watch them in reverse chronological order(-ish), beginning with Daybreakers.

Sam plays a sadistic CEO of a ruthless conglomerate hellbent on ruling an Earth dominated by vampires. And yes, Sam is a vampire in this. And yes, Sam does chomp down on Ethan Hawke's neck in it, which shouldn't be erotic but — hey, anything goes on Sam Neilloween.

Then you move to two of Sam's heavy hitters: Event Horizon and In the Mouth of Madness.

Sam plays Dr. Weir, a deeply troubled — and deeply misunderstood! — engineer who cracked the mystery of faster-than-light travel, but unknowingly ... uh ... ripped open a hole to Hell. It's not his fault that breaking the laws of physics came with consequences! And it's not his fault that — well, no spoilers, but I'm firmly #TeamWeir.

Then, the midpoint, baby, it's In the Mouth of Madness.

As perfectly suited as Sam was to Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, I think John Trent — the impeccably dressed, effortlessly cool, snarky as hell insurance investigator — is tied for his most iconic role. This movie, a cosmic horror fever dream with some of the goriest, most surreal creature effects of the '90s, is a perfect showcase for everything Sam was capable of as an actor. The wit, the sex appeal, the charm as he goes from cad to reluctant "hero" to madman. It's a great midpoint in this marathon.

Next, flip his two 1981 releases and start with The Omen III: The Final Conflict.

Arguably his breakthrough role to US audiences, Sam plays Damian all growed up and ready to slay the baby Nazarene on his quest to world damnation/domination. This movie has kind of a notorious reputation as being terrible, and sure, there are choices in this movie (like the baby murder montage), but it's all held together by a diabolical performance from Sam. He has so many monologues in this movie, and he nails every one of them. I'm not ashamed to admit that Sam is so hot when he's chewing scenery. And this is a perfect lead-in to the final film in the marathon:

Possession.

Just ... brace yourselves. This is Sam at a 10, at his most raw, at his most real, at his most relentless. It's a cinematic masterpiece, and the best way to cap off a 9-ish hour marathon.

Happy Sam Neilloween, everyone.
