Welcome back to Fantastic Plastic — the monthly musing here at Pop Heist where I run down my five favorite figural drops from the past month! I'm John DeQuadros, and with 25 years experience in the industry as both a photographer and writer, I've seen it all: the wins, the washouts, and everything in between. Here? We celebrate the best of the best — figures that bring the wows, the whoas, and often the well, I guess it's time to start stocking up on ramen again!
August may have been summer's curtain call, but the toy industry kept things cooking. Conventions cooled off, blockbusters bounced over to home release, but the plastic remained pipping hot! Narrowing down my favorites wasn't easy — I scribbled, studied, and cursed my camera equipment more than once — but was finally able to lock in five finalists that I feel have truly earned their spot. So, whether you've just snagged your first Spider-Man, or are juggling a pre-order list bigger than Bruce Wayne's bankroll (we've all been there), consider this your front-row seat to the month's finest. Let's jump in and see who closed out the summer season with some serious sizzle...
5. DC Multiverse — Azrael Batman (Knightquest)

Based on the original Kenner classic, McFarlane's latest release brings Jean-Paul Valley's armored alter ego roaring back to life with loads of unfiltered '90s attitude. The bold blues of the comic are swapped for a fiery red and gold getup that perfectly captures the brazen, over-the-top tempo of the era — when Bane broke the Bat and Gotham fell under the watchful eye of a more cruel Caped Crusader. Sure, it may just be a repaint, and the spring-loaded missile launcher didn't make the final cut, but what's left is a retro-flavored homage to one of Kenner's coolest. From the menacing, angular cowl to those gloriously impractical battle wings, this figure is a full-throttle celebration of the excess that was Legends of the Dark Knight!
4. Star Wars: The Black Series — Han Solo

They say good things come to those who wait — and Hasbro's new Black Series Han Solo proves it. This scruffy-looking nerf herder, straight out of A New Hope, has never looked better, rocking an import-worthy photo-real likeness that perfectly captures a young Harrison Ford's roguish good looks. The updated articulation is smooth and natural, letting you strike daring poses without breaking up the lines of the sculpt. Of course, Han's trusty blaster is included and, while the swappable gloved hands of the original are MIA this time around, the figure easily eclipses the 2013 version with sharper details, better proportions, and colors that more closely resembles what's seen on screen. Bottom line, this is the Han Solo we've been waiting for!
3. S.H. Figuarts — Across the Spider-Verse Spider-Gwen

Bandai's newest wall-crawler is an absolute delight, nailing every detail of Gwen Stacy's iconic look. From the sleek black and white palette to the subtle webbing etched into the arms and hood, the sculpt work is spot-on. Articulation is next-level, letting the figure twist, turn, and pivot for a dazzling array of aerobatic poses, while a generous selection of accessories makes her an endlessly versatile centerpiece to any collection. Embodying all the energy and style fans love, Spider-Gwen perfectly balances stunning design, top-tier poseability, and fun customization. A must-have for fans of Miles Morales' multiversal meanderings!
2. Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers — Vega

Knockout style is once again the name of the game with Jada's all-new Vega figure. This latest Street Fighter stalwart is as flashy as he is lethal, packed with plenty of 16-bit bravado that's impossible to resist. The sculpt is sleek, muscular, and full of character, while the wide range of articulation (including his ponytail) lets Vega pull off a wide range of jaw-dropping poses with effortless elegance. Accessories amp up the action, including masked and unmasked heads, two pairs of deadly claws, and some dynamic effects pieces that bring every strike to life. With Jada's unbeatable mix of quality and price, Vega is a no holds bared action extravaganza that's ready to decimate any challenger and steal the spotlight on any shelf.
1. Pee-Wee's Playhouse Ultimate Pee-Wee Herman

Today's secret word is... Winner! That's right, NECA swoops in and snags the top spot this month with their all-new Ultimate Pee-Wee Herman figure, and wow, does it ever deliver a big 'ol dose of quirky delight! This pint-sized powerhouse perfectly channels all the childlike wonder, mischievous charm, and sly wit of Paul Reuben's iconic character. Decked out in his signature grey suit and bright red bow tie, Pee-Wee comes loaded with three swappable heads, seven interchangeable hands, a pair of secret word cards (honestly, there should have been more), and — hold on to your bikes — Pterri the Pterodactyl! Every absurd little detail bursts with the gleeful energy and offbeat imagination that made Pee-Wee a pop culture phenomenon. It's playful, it's surreal, it's downright wacky — and the perfect way to inject some zany, whimsical fun into any collection!
